Pennsylvania Business Insurance

Owner, MVP Insurance

Pennsylvania business insurance for small companies usually combines five coverages: general liability, workers comp, commercial auto, commercial property, and a business owners policy (BOP). MVP Insurance, an independent agency with offices in Zelienople, PA and New Springfield, OH, compares these policies across multiple carriers for businesses from Pittsburgh to Butler County.

Most owners don't need every policy on day one. A contractor in Cranberry with two trucks and a crew has very different exposures than a solo bookkeeper working from a home office in Mars. The goal is to match coverage to how your business actually operates, so a single bad day doesn't wipe out years of work.

Pennsylvania Business Insurance for Pittsburgh and Butler County

MVP Insurance provides local coverage by shopping your business across multiple carriers and building a package around your real risks. Josh Medure and David Varrati founded the agency in 2008. It operates from 108 E Grandview Ave in Zelienople, PA, (724) 453-1122, and 13823 Grant St in New Springfield, OH, (330) 707-9055.

Being independent means the agency works for you and not for an insurance company. That matters in western Pennsylvania, where conditions vary from one place to the next. A restaurant in the Strip District and a landscaper in rural Butler County face different weather, traffic, and litigation exposure. Businesses in the Butler County and Cranberry area often need endorsements for ice dams and frozen pipes. Standard policies may cover the resulting water damage but leave out the cost of removing the ice dam itself.

General Liability and Business Owners Policies

General liability pays for third-party injuries and property damage. A customer slips on your wet floor, or your installer cracks a client's granite countertop, and this policy responds. A Business Owners Policy bundles that liability coverage with property protection and, often, cyber coverage. For many small businesses, a BOP gives broader protection than buying each piece separately.

Liability limits deserve real attention here. Pennsylvania recorded 42 nuclear verdicts over $10 million between June 2021 and May 2026, and these cases are increasingly appearing in suburban counties like Beaver. Some observers describe the state's courts as part of a challenging litigation climate for businesses.

Pricing varies by carrier, and these figures should be confirmed before you buy. Industry sources report a median of roughly $41 a month for standalone general liability among Pennsylvania small businesses. Penn National raised its BOP minimum premium to $625 a year in 2026.

Workers Comp and Commercial Auto Requirements

Pennsylvania law generally requires workers compensation for businesses with employees, including part-time workers. Vehicles your company owns need commercial auto coverage. One mistake comes up again and again: an owner assumes their personal auto policy covers a truck titled to the LLC. It usually doesn't, and the gap often surfaces only after a claim is denied.

There is some good news on cost. Effective April 1, 2026, the state approved a 1.22% average decrease in workers' comp loss costs.Insurers must now also offer direct deposit for wage loss benefits. Commercial auto is moving the other way, with premiums up 5.8% in Q1 2026, the 59th straight quarterly increase. See our guide to workers comp insurance in Pennsylvaniafor more detail.

Coverage Required in PA? Who Needs It
Workers Comp Generally yes, with employees Most employers
Commercial Auto Yes, for business-owned vehicles Companies with titled vehicles
General Liability Not by state law Often required by leases and contracts
Commercial Property Not by state law Often required by lenders
BOP No Small businesses wanting bundled coverage

Commercial Property and Industry Specific Coverage

Commercial property insurance protects your building, inventory, tools, and equipment from fire, theft, storms, and burst pipes. Rates have recently moved in buyers' favor. Commercial property pricing fell an average of 13% in Q2 2026as reinsurance capacity grew. The state also issued Notice 2026-07, which deregulated certain commercial lines to encourage competition. That combination makes this a good time to re-shop a policy you haven't reviewed in years.

Underinsuring is the gap we see most often. Owners list equipment at its purchase price from 2015 instead of what it would cost to replace today, so a total loss pays out far less than they expect.

Frequently Asked Questions About PA Business Insurance

Is workers comp required in PA?Generally yes. If you have employees, Pennsylvania requires workers compensation coverage, even for part-time staff.

What does a BOP cover?A BOP bundles general liability and commercial property coverage, and it often includes cyber protection. It's designed to give small businesses broad coverage in one policy.

Does my personal auto policy cover my work truck?Usually not, especially if the business owns the vehicle. Company-owned vehicles need commercial auto coverage.

How much is general liability insurance in Pennsylvania?Industry estimates put the median at around $41 a month for small businesses, but your rate depends on your trade, revenue, and claims history.

Do I need business insurance if I work from home?Often yes. Homeowners policies typically exclude business equipment and client injuries connected to your work.

Why use an independent agent? An independent agent compares multiple carriers on your behalf instead of selling a single company's products.

The right business coverage in Pennsylvania starts with the basics: liability for the public, workers comp for your team, auto for your vehicles, and property for your equipment. After that, you fine-tune for local risks like frozen pipes and the state's tough litigation climate. MVP Insurance holds Ohio license #37714, Pennsylvania license #519263, and NPN 10588293.
