Owner, MVP Insurance
Pittsburgh business insurance starts with a few essentials: general liability, commercial property, workers compensation once you hire, and commercial auto if vehicles are part of the job. From there, coverage depends on your trade. A Lawrenceville bar, a Strip District software startup, and a Cranberry roofing crew face very different claims, and their policies should reflect that.
Pittsburgh also has its own quirks. Hillsides slide, old sewers overflow, rowhouses share walls, and city contracts come with paperwork that can stall a bid if your certificate is wrong. The sections below cover what each type of business actually needs, where the common gaps are, and how to meet city requirements without scrambling the week a contract is due.
Essential Pittsburgh PA Business Insurance for Local Industries
MVP Insurance serves Pittsburgh businesses as an independent agency, which means we shop multiple carriers instead of selling one company's products. Josh Medure and David Varrati founded MVP in 2008, and the agency works out of offices in Zelienople, PA and New Springfield, OH. Zelienople sits about 30 miles north of downtown, close enough to know the difference between insuring a Mt. Lebanon dental practice and a contractor working Route 28 projects.
Because we're independent, our job is to compare policies and explain the tradeoffs: one carrier may price restaurants well but restrict liquor liability, while another may welcome contractors but carry steep deductibles. We do that comparison legwork so you don't have to call five companies yourself. Clients also get 24/7 claims support and app-based tools for pulling certificates and ID cards.
If you want the statewide picture first, our page on business insurance across Pennsylvaniacovers the basics. Owners who also need personal coverage for their own vehicles can review car insurance for Pittsburgh drivers, since many small business owners blend personal and business driving without realizing it creates a coverage problem.

Coverage for Restaurants, Tech Startups, and Contractors
Each of these industries needs general liability and property coverage, but the claims that actually hurt them look very different. Here's what we see most.
Restaurants in older neighborhoods often operate in converted rowhouses or attached storefronts. A grease fire in one unit can spread through shared walls and roofs, so you need property limits that reflect real rebuild costs and business income coverage to pay bills while you're closed. Liquor is the other big exposure. Pennsylvania's dram shop law makes a licensee liable when it serves a visibly intoxicated person who then injures someone. Pittsburgh restaurants can now sell spirits-based ready-to-drink cocktails for takeout under the RTDC permit, and RAMP certification is required for that permit while also serving as a primary underwriting factor for liquor liability pricing.
Tech startups rarely own much physical property, but they hold customer data and write code that clients depend on. Cyber liability and technology errors and omissions matter more to a Bakery Square startup than a big property limit.
Contractors live and die by liability. Residential contractors doing work over $500 must register under HICPA and carry at least $50,000 in general liability, while commercial Pittsburgh projects typically expect $1,000,000 per occurrence.
Two gaps catch everyone. Allegheny County landslides are a known coverage gap, since standard property policies exclude earth movement. And combined sewer overflows during heavy rain push water into basements, which isn't covered unless you add sewer and water backup coverage. Ask about both before your next storm season.

Professional Firms and Cyber Liability Protection
Professional firms need errors and omissions coverage and cyber liability as a pair, because their two biggest risks are bad advice and stolen data. General liability covers a client tripping in your lobby. It does nothing when a client claims your missed deadline cost them $200,000.
Think about an accounting firm in the North Shore. A missed filing triggers penalties for a client, and that's an E&O claim. A month later, a staffer clicks a phishing link and tax returns for 400 clients are exposed. That's a cyber claim, with notification costs, credit monitoring, forensic investigators, and possibly a ransom demand. Firms often buy one policy and assume it handles both. It usually doesn't.
Law offices, engineering firms, architects, consultants, and medical practices all fall into the same trap. Watch for these policy details:
- Retroactive dates: E&O is usually claims-made, so switching carriers carelessly can leave past work uncovered.
- Social engineering sublimits: Many cyber policies cap fraudulent wire transfer losses at a small fraction of the main limit.
- Contract requirements: Corporate clients increasingly demand proof of cyber coverage before signing.
Regulators are tightening data rules across the industry too. Pennsylvania now requires domiciled insurers to certify compliance with state data security standards every year under Act 2 of 2023. If insurers face that scrutiny, expect your clients to ask harder questions about how you protect their information.
Meeting City Contract Requirements and Workers Comp Standards
If you have employees in Pennsylvania, you need workers compensation, and if you want City of Pittsburgh contracts, you'll need to prove specific coverages and limits before work starts. Both are non-negotiable.
Workers comp pays medical bills and lost wages for job-related injuries. Benefits keep rising: for injuries on or after January 1, 2026, the maximum weekly compensation rate is $1,394.00, a 3.5% increase over 2025. A common mistake is classifying workers as 1099 contractors to skip comp. If the state or an injured worker decides they were really employees, you're on the hook personally.
City contracts work through certificates of insurance. The contract spells out required coverages, minimum limits, and usually that the City be named as an additional insured. Requirements vary by project and change over time, so read each solicitation closely (verify current terms at publish). Typical asks include general liability around $1,000,000 per occurrence, auto liability, workers comp, and sometimes umbrella or professional liability. Send us the insurance section of the bid before you submit, and we'll confirm your policy matches or add the endorsements needed.
Comparison of Mandatory vs Recommended Coverage
| Coverage | Required? | Who needs it most |
|---|---|---|
| Workers comp | Yes, with employees | All employers |
| Commercial auto | Yes, for business vehicles | Contractors, caterers, delivery |
| General liability | Often by contract or HICPA | Contractors, restaurants, retail |
| Liquor liability | Practically required for licensees | Bars, restaurants |
| Professional/E&O | Sometimes by contract | Firms, consultants, tech |
| Cyber liability | Recommended | Anyone storing client data |
| Sewer backup | Recommended | Buildings with basements |
| Earth movement | Recommended, hard to find | Hillside properties |
Navigating Pittsburgh Logistics and Transit Risks
Pittsburgh's tunnels, bridges, and tight streets raise commercial auto risk, and underwriters know it. If your vehicles cross the rivers daily, expect carriers to ask detailed questions about routes and drivers.
The Fort Pitt and Liberty tunnels are classic bottlenecks. Sudden braking at tunnel entrances causes rear-end collisions, and box trucks and contractors' trailers face height and lane restrictions that drivers new to the city don't always respect. A single rear-end crash with injuries can exceed a $500,000 auto limit, which is why we often suggest an umbrella policy for fleets that run those corridors daily.
Dense rowhouse neighborhoods add another layer. Narrow streets in Polish Hill, Bloomfield, and the South Side Slopes mean tight parking, mirror strikes, and backing accidents. For general liability, contractors working on attached homes face the risk that damage to one house spreads to the neighbor's: water from a burst line or a fire from a torch can affect two or three properties at once. Underwriters factor that in when pricing.
A few practical steps help: run motor vehicle records on every driver, list every vehicle and driver on the policy, and add hired and non-owned auto coverage if employees run errands in personal cars. That last one is the gap we see most often with small firms.

Common Questions About Pittsburgh Business Insurance
Do I need insurance for a home business in Pittsburgh? Usually yes. Homeowners policies typically exclude or tightly limit business property and business liability, so a client injury or stolen work equipment may not be covered without a business policy or endorsement.
What does workers comp cover in PA? It covers medical treatment and part of lost wages for work-related injuries and illnesses. For 2026 injuries, weekly wage benefits max out at $1,394.00.
How do city contract requirements work? The contract lists required coverages and limits, and you prove them with a certificate of insurance. The City usually must be named as an additional insured, which takes an endorsement on your policy.
Why is landslide coverage excluded? Standard property policies exclude earth movement because landslide losses can be massive and concentrated in specific hillside areas. In Allegheny County, it's a known gap, and separate coverage can be limited or expensive.
Is sewer backup covered automatically? No. You need to add water and sewer backup coverage, which matters a lot given how often combined sewer overflows flood Pittsburgh basements.
